Fountains of Paradise

Set in Sri Lanka and written by longtime resident and adopted son Arthur C. Clarke, it tells of the construction of a space elevator whose height matches the geo-synchronous orbit of today's satellites, and contains an epilogue set hundreds of years after the main action of the novel, when the original elevator is but a small part of a continuous structure ringing the entire Earth.
